Imad Hijazin confirmed that the tourism sector faces challenges due to the current regional developments and their direct impact on travel and tourism in the Kingdom, highlighting that the government is cooperating with various relevant entities to enhance the sector’s ability to adapt and maintain its sustainability.

Hijazin reviewed, according to a statement by the Jordanian Businessmen Association during a meeting organized by the association on Monday, the recovery indicators of the sector and the government efforts to support it, pointing out that the domestic tourism program “Our Jordan is a Paradise” registered the participation of 51,706 people from March 31 until May 1, with 1,446 buses and tourist guides involved, 81 restaurants and 63 accommodation facilities benefiting from the program, in addition to 15,207 tourist nights and 14,809 participants in overnight trips.

He noted that the ministry has intensified tourist and cultural activities within the annual calendar, through hosting and organizing international artistic events and participating in international events, in addition to supporting the celebrations of the 80th Independence Day in cooperation with 11 embassies, contributing to stimulating tourism movement and enhancing Jordan’s position on the regional and international tourism map.

He added that the ministry is working to enhance tourism promotion through marketing campaigns and tourist packages in Arab countries under the slogan “Ahlan b’Jordan”, alongside launching a religious tourism platform to promote the Baptism site, and the “Salamtak” platform for medical tourism, as well as participating in international tourism exhibitions and events.

Hijazin affirmed the continuation of measures to empower the tourism sector, which include developing religious, medical, and adventure tourism products, qualifying museums and tourist sites, improving service levels and infrastructure, developing city centers, promoting inclusive tourism, and working on establishing a fund for the development and improvement of the tourism sector through passing regulatory legislation and providing the necessary resources to support it.

He explained that the ministry continues to accelerate digital transformation in the sector by digitizing tourism services, completing electronic linking with partners, establishing a unified platform for statistical analysis, and using geographic data to highlight investment opportunities, supporting decision-making, and enhancing the sector’s competitiveness.

He pointed out that the government has put in place a plan to support the sector that included forming an emergency committee to address challenges, along with a package of stimulating measures that included bearing the interest on certain loans and financial facilities, postponing and installment of dues and obligations due on tourism establishments, contributing to the continuity of businesses and supporting the workers in it.

For his part, the President of the Jordanian Businessmen Association, Ayman Al-Alawneh, stressed the importance of establishing a national joint action mechanism between the public and private sectors to effectively and quickly address the challenges facing the tourism sector, and preparing a work matrix that includes executive programs, timelines, and measurable performance indicators, to ensure the implementation of solutions and enhance recovery and sustainability.

He also emphasized the importance of supporting small and medium tourism establishments through stimulating packages, financial and tax facilities, postponing obligations, and providing easy financing programs, in addition to developing training and qualification programs for workers in the sector, and boosting investment in tourism projects and developing infrastructure.

He called for stimulating local and foreign investment through offering more facilities and exemptions, and simplifying procedures, contributing to creating new job opportunities, raising the sector’s contribution to the GDP, and achieving sustainable development.

For his part, the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Jordan, Khaldoun Weshah, explained that the Central Bank provided facilitating financing terms through banks to tourism establishments affected by regional circumstances.

These facilities, within the Central Bank’s program to finance economic sectors, aim to cover operational expenses especially salaries, ensuring business continuity, job preservation, and accelerating recovery until the end of 2026, while the government bears the interests or returns on these financings.

For his part, the General Manager of the Association of Banks in Jordan, Maher Mahrouq, stated that the banking sector continues to support the private sector ensuring the sustainability of economic activity and job preservation, emphasizing the importance of addressing challenges in a balanced manner without burdening any sector with the responsibilities of ongoing economic difficulties.

He noted that banking financing focuses on supporting investments and businesses, not financing emergency crises, highlighting the necessity of dealing with current challenges through collaborative solutions that consider the stability of various sectors and maintain their sustainability.

The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority, Engineer Adnan Al-Sawair, said that the city of Petra primarily relies on incoming tourism, making it the most affected by any regional developments or crises impacting booking movements and foreign tourism.

Al-Sawair said that Petra has an advanced infrastructure but it is costly due to the challenging geographical nature of the area, noting that the tourism sector there is going through difficult times due to a sharp decline in foreign tourist numbers.

He mentioned that the authority has provided all it can to support the tourism sector through cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Jordan Tourism Board and programs such as “Our Jordan is a Paradise”, in addition to being ready to offer more facilities to stimulate tourism movement.

He added that the authority is currently preparing for the post-tourism return phase through implementing projects related to infrastructure, economic updating, administrative management, and digital transformation, along with developmental projects accompanying the ongoing infrastructure projects in the region

General
