The Jordanian Businessmen Association (JBA) and the Scottish Asian Business Chamber in Glasgow have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a Jordanian-Scottish Business Council. This council aims to bolster economic, trade, and investment relations between Jordan and Scotland.
The agreement was signed during a meeting between the Jordanian economic delegation, currently visiting the United Kingdom, and representatives from the Scottish Asian Business Chamber.
Speaking at the event, Abdulrahman Abu Tair, JBA board member and head of the Jordanian delegation, highlighted the strategic importance of deepening economic ties. He noted Jordan’s position as a vital gateway for investment and trade in the Middle East, offering attractive opportunities in renewable energy, tourism, and technology. These sectors, he added, are supported by legislation and incentives designed to encourage foreign investment.
Abu Tair called on Scottish business leaders to visit Jordan and explore its investment landscape. He also emphasized the importance of exchanging expertise between the private sectors in both countries, particularly in technology and innovation, and suggested hosting joint workshops and meetings to facilitate knowledge sharing.
He further stressed the need to strengthen collaboration in tourism and foster partnerships between universities and research institutions to advance scientific and technological development.
Tariq Hijazi, Director-General of the JBA, outlined the association’s role in promoting Jordan as a hub for economic opportunities. He noted that the JBA has signed several agreements to establish business councils and foster cooperation with international business communities. Hijazi revealed that trade volume between Jordan and Scotland reached JD 68 million in 2023.
Scottish representatives, including officials from Scotland’s Investment Councils and Glasgow authorities, showcased investment opportunities in sectors such as the green economy and smart cities.
The Jordanian delegation also visited the University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde, where they learned about the institutions’ contributions to economic growth and innovation. Both universities were praised for their focus on technical and vocational education, which aligns with the needs of Scotland’s private sector.
